Who Are the British Sleddog Sports Federation?
The British Sleddog Sports Federation (BSSF) is the national governing body dedicated to the development, promotion and representation of sleddog sports in Great Britain. Established in 2012, the Federation was formally created to provide a unified structure for competitive sleddog sports, support athletes and clubs, and ensure that Great Britain is represented on the international stage. The BSSF works to promote excellence in competition while placing the welfare of dogs, fair play and sportsmanship at the heart of everything it does.
Today, the BSSF represents a vibrant community of athletes, clubs, volunteers and officials across England, Scotland and Wales. Its role extends beyond organising competition; it serves as a central point for education, athlete development, governance and international representation. Through its activities, the Federation helps newcomers discover the sport while supporting experienced competitors in achieving success at national and international level.
The Federation oversees and promotes a wide range of sleddog disciplines, including Canicross, Bikejor, Scooter, Rig Racing, and traditional snow-based sled racing. These disciplines allow competitors and their dogs to work together as a team, whether running, cycling or racing on snow. The BSSF also organises the annual British National Championships, providing athletes with the opportunity to compete for national titles and selection to represent Great Britain internationally.
A key part of the BSSF’s work is supporting pathways for athletes to compete on the world stage. The Federation is recognised by and affiliated with the International Federation of Sleddog Sports, the global governing body for sleddog sports. Through this affiliation, British athletes can qualify for IFSS World Championships, European Championships and World Cup events, competing alongside the best athletes from around the world.
The BSSF is also affiliated with the International Canicross Federation, strengthening opportunities for British canicross athletes and helping to develop international cooperation within one of the fastest-growing dog sports. Through its relationships with both the IFSS and ICF, the Federation ensures that British competitors have access to internationally recognised competition pathways and standards.
Above all, the British Sleddog Sports Federation exists to grow and strengthen sleddog sports in Great Britain. By supporting clubs, developing athletes, promoting responsible dog-powered sport and creating opportunities for participation at every level, the BSSF continues to inspire people and dogs to achieve more together. Whether your goal is to enjoy recreational canicross, race at a national championship, or represent Great Britain internationally, the BSSF provides the framework, community and expertise to help you succeed.
