This is what we all dream of, fresh white snow, blue skies and a well-groomed trail! Although it’s relatively infrequent that we get to race on snow in the UK, it does happen at least once a year and when it does, mushers across the country break out the sleds!
Racing in the snow
Of course, travel abroad and it is a more regular occurrence with many races held on snow in Europe, Scandinavia and North America. The On-Snow Championships happens once a year too, but we ask that you have proof of at least one previous ‘on-snow’ race before applying to compete.
Distance racing
Our British Athletes and their teams compete in all the various disciplines of the sport. Distances are usually; Sprint – 4-15 miles, Mid Distance – 50-156 miles, or Long Distance – 156 miles+. Some world famous log distance races include the Iditarod and Yukon Quest (both 1000 miles!).
A good way in to ‘On-Snow’ races as a beginner is to practice with a team of dogs. More information on this can be found on our dry land page.
