BSSF members insurance cover

Cover/amount:

Public Liability (Maximum £10M per claim) for training and racing in both the UK and Europe.

All training activities can only be undertaken where you have any consent or landholders permission required.

If you are a paid-up member of the BSSF, then in insurance terms you are free to represent the entity you are a member of – the BSSF – in training or races. With races, you may be selected to represent BSSF where appropriate or you can take yourself to attend. There is no requirement for the BSSF to approve your involvement in any event (except certain international races as below).

You are NOT covered for any activity under this policy if you are under the instruction of any other party such as a coach or sled-dog sports club.

Examples

Subject to the general principles of insurance:

Training

You are covered:

  1. To train by yourself (although you should ensure you have suitable safety plans in this instance)

  2. To train in an informal group

You are NOT covered:

  1. To train in any formal or instructed group – such as with a coach or an organised club group.

  2. To lead or formally instruct a group (an individual can provide local and directional knowledge only).

In these situations, the person in charge of the group will have primary responsibility for public (and other) liability and thus they must have suitable insurance cover for all in their group.

Racing

You are covered:

  1. All BSSF races.

  2. ICF and IFSS races – as you are selected by the BSSF to represent us.

  3. Any independent or open race in which you are free to choose to represent the BSSF as your “club”.

You are NOT covered:

  1. If selected to race by any other body.

  2. If you are representing any other group.

  3. If you enter another race provider’s members only event or competition – then you will need to be covered under their policy.

  4. Some race organisers only accept their own insurance cover – again you will be covered under the policy they provide.

Summary

This may not be an exhaustive list, so please check the cover details and the specific situation and satisfy yourself on the basis that you train and the terms of any race you enter. You can ask any race organiser if they can accept you representing the BSSF.

Insurance certificates are generated using the name of the logged in member. If you have a legacy mixed membership where you have used the same login for a junior / adult membership, the name will likely be incorrect. This also goes for 2 adults sharing one login to buy 2 memberships. In this circumstance please reach out to technical https://thebssf.org.uk/contact-us/ so we can see what has happened and advise on the best way forwards.

You can access your account by visiting this link: https://thebssf.org.uk/my-account or by visiting Membership > Account Management > My Account. From that menu you can update your details, see your orders, check your subscription, add or change a payment method. You must be a paid member and logged in to see this section.

You can cancel your subscription by first logging in from the Sites menu, top right and the visit: https://thebssf.org.uk/my-account or by visiting Membership > My Account > My Subscription

Adult & Junior memberships can no longer be mixed or purchased under the same email address. Each member requires a unique email address to login. If buying for a junior you can obtain a free email address from Google, iCloud & Outlook.

Adult / Junior race categories can no longer be mixed either way around at checkout. The system will also not allow members to buy the opposite age race classes. This is to help stop confusion when creating a race start list and making sure every competitor is correctly added to the right class and age category with the new digital waiver.

As each member / racer requires a unique email address to login. If buying for a junior you can obtain a free email address from Google, iCloud & Outlook. To help with identification we recommend using a format like: juniorsname.BSSF@outlook.com

No dog less than eighteen months old on the first day of the event will be accepted for entry other than the recreational class; in which dogs twelve months old shall be eligible to run. Dogs must be at least 12 weeks of age and have had their initial vaccinations, in accordance with the British Small Animal Veterinary Association guidelines, to be allowed on any BSSF event site.

Your age is calculated on the 31st December at the end of the current season. (e.g 2025/2026 season = age on 31st Dec 2026)

All dogs at race sites must be vaccinated initially and with their first annual booster against Hepatitis, Distemper, Parvovirus, and Leptospirosis. It is the responsibility of the musher to demonstrate vaccination records for all dogs at a race if requested.

Race rules and many other useful documents can be found by visiting the site menu > About > Documents

Lockouts typically happen when a password has been entered 4 or more times incorrectly. You will see a warning that states “access has been temporarily limited”. Lockouts typically last 10 minutes but can often be resolved by filling in your registered email address in the “Send Unlock Email” field.

Reach out to the Technical team from this link https://thebssf.org.uk/contact-us/ and we will make sure your request is resolved or sent to the correct member of the BSSF Council / Team.
